Old is New

What's old is new again

What's old is new again

One popular trend brides are leaning towards is revitalizing styles from the 20s and 50s. Gowns are trending towards shorter and more color than the traditional white or ivory. Check out old TV shows or movies from those eras for inspiration for your wedding. Look at renting more traditional or older style venues for your wedding location to fit with a retro theme. You can probably find a great bargain on a “non-traditional” wedding venue rental.

Not only are the look and feel of weddings taking inspiration from the old – but brides are using heirloom items in their decor. Take a look at vintage items to spice up your decor – incorporate photographs of parents and grandparents into your decor. Utilize vintage napkin holders and chandeliers into your decor. Visit antique stores and second hand stores for a variety of old looking picture frames.

Look for other ways to include generational items into your theme as well. Perhaps (with a little altering) you can wear your grandmother’s wedding dress or your mother’s necklace. Your wedding is, after all, a celebration of the creation of your new family. Incorporating traditions and pieces from your family and your new husband’s family into your wedding day can increase the memories and traditions you are building.

Hot Wedding Trends for 2011

16 Apr

Planning a Vintage or Retro-inspired Idaho Wedding

Congratulations you’re engaged! You have your wedding date picked and now you are ready to begin planning the most important day of your life. But have you asked the question: What are the hottest wedding trends for 2011?  Here are a few I thought might be helpful.

Vintage Modern:

Vintage and retro-inspired with a modern twist.  What’s old is new.

  • Vintage wedding dresses with cap sleeves
  • Beautiful textures
  • Ornate details
  • Natural settings, including outdoor and backyard weddings
  • Vintage photography
  • Nontraditional veils, vintage or heirloom combs.

Eco-friendly weddings:

Environmentally friendly weddings. Second-hand and vintage wedding dresses, LED lighting, recycled paper invitations and programs, and food from local Idaho farms and Idaho providers. Charity donations are a popular option instead of traditional wedding favors, and couples can ask for donations to their favorite charity instead of wedding gifts.

Wedding Colors – Going Bold!

02 Apr

Going bold with your wedding colors

Selecting your wedding style and colors will be some of your first items to do, helping to set the décor decisions you will make from here forward. Not all brides want traditional wedding colors like white with pale pink or navy blue with silver accents. When you are looking for ways to incorporate the “wow” factor into your wedding, think about using colors with more intensity and boldness. One of the most intense color combinations is purple and red for a wedding with pizzazz.

Purple and red make a strong statement together; they work well for bridesmaids dresses, selecting one of the colors as the focal point and accenting the other. For example: Deep Eggplant Purple could be accented with a red sash and red flower in hair, or a Red dress with a Deep Purple Shawl and strappy sandals to coordinate.  Your bridesmaids will look fabulous and flirty and your groomsmen dashing. There will be no demure looking attendants with this color palette!

These intense colors of purple and red should be accented or layered with a subdued color such as burnt orange or chocolate brown to keep your wedding color palette deep and mysterious. You could also add a lighter color for contrast such as cream, taupe or pale gold. It depends on the time of day, the formality and how dramatic you want your wedding and reception to be.

The modern weddings of today are amazing and the wedding food and drinks served at them can be paired with your color scheme. Signature drinks in purple and reds would look fabulous lined up on the bar for guests to take for a most impressive look.

Every bride and groom wants to express the love and passion they feel for each other, so a dramatic purple and red wedding color scheme is just what you will need.  From the flowers to bridal party attire and the food to the favors; this dramatic color pairing will make for an unforgettable wedding.

Here’s to Sand in Your Hair – Unique Wedding Ceremony

18 Jan

A hot new trend is sweeping the nation, taking a cue from reality TV in the marriage of Trista Rehn and Ryan Sutter of the TV series, “The Bachelorette.” Brides looking for a way to spice up the traditional unity candle ceremony have discovered the sharing of sand.

The ceremony entails pouring sand from a personal container the bride and groom choose (such as a shell or other object of personal significance) into another singular vessel. The idea is old, but the symbolism is new – the combining of two unique individuals into one cohesive family. Often times, the couples will retain a small portion from the whole symbolizing retaining unique attributes of the Bride and Groom.

Often times the sand is colored, and the combination of the two colors create yet another. Not having your wedding on the beach? Grab some sand from your favorite Idaho location to use instead – or somewhere else that holds a special meaning for you as a couple. Or, if all else fails you can find colored sand online available for purchase.

In an age where couples are planning weddings that are unique to their beliefs and lifestyle, the sand ceremony can be personalized many different ways to fit the occasion. Let your imagination loose – choose different colors to represent different promises, personality traits, anything – pair the ceremony with your favorite poem or song. Any way you plan it, you will have  a unique keepsake to treasure after your wedding.

Environmentally friendly wedding transportation

13 Nov
Airport Shuttle Bus

Have your guests take advantage of shuttle busses

With a bit of planning, it is easy to make your wedding more earth-friendly, from the invitations that you choose to the attire, the food, and the dishware. The suggestions discussed over the last month can be incorporated into other events as well, from anniversary parties to company picnics.

By making a few changes, you can do your part to make the Earth a better place and reduce the glut of landfill waste.

Transportation - If you will have a number of out-of-town guests attending the wedding, you might arrange transportation for them so they don’t need to rent cars. Most hotels will provide shuttle service to and from the airport. Many cities offer trolleys and/or shuttle buses that you can rent by the hour to transport guests to and from the ceremony and reception. If your city doesn’t offer such a service, then rent one or more passenger vans and ask a friend or relative to act as chauffeur.

Choosing catering for a green wedding

06 Nov

Consider a smaller wedding cake with additional sheet cakes

Smaller wedding cakes and environmentally friendly decorations

Catering – Choose a caterer that uses locally grown organic ingredients, not canned, frozen, or packaged ones, in the preparation of their food. Not only will the food taste better, but you will save on all of the packaging and on the pollution associated with transportation.

You can prevent a great deal of waste by asking your caterer to use real dishware, not disposable plates and plastic utensils. Also rent coffee cups and glassware rather than using plastic or Styrofoam. Avoid using plastic tablecloths or paper napkins. Though it may cost a bit more to rent dishes, glasses, and linens, and they will all need to be washed (by the rental center, not you), you will keep a huge amount of refuse out of the landfill. If you choose to use disposable plates, eating utensils, and napkins, choose ones made from recycled paper, sugarcane, cornstarch, or other biodegradable materials, such as those found at http://www.earthwarebiodegradables.com/.

Ask the caterer what happens to the left-over food. If you are having your reception at a hotel, restaurant or another facility that has an in-house kitchen, you won’t be entitled to leftovers. If you are using the services of an outside caterer to bring prepared food to your location, ask for those leftovers that can be safely consumed later. You paid for them, so you should get them. Health laws require that foods containing eggs, cream, seafood, mayonnaise, and some other ingredients must be disposed of after setting at room temperature for a period of time. Other items, such as pasta salad, green salad (minus the dressing), some meats and cheeses, fruits, and breads should be fine for you to take. Be sure to bring zip-lock bags and coolers with ice in which to store the food. If you don’t have a need for the food, donate it to a homeless shelter or soup kitchen.

Ask your caterer and bartender to provide containers to sort cans and glass for easy recycling later. You will need to arrange for someone to remove the items from the reception site and take them to a recycling center.

Wedding Cake – If you are inviting more than about 100 guests, order a smaller wedding cake and supplement with sheet cakes. The sheet cakes require less icing and decoration and therefore cost less, as well as saving on ingredients. If you have left-over cake and you don’t think you will eat it soon, take it to a shelter. The residents will enjoy the treat.

Check back next week for environmentally-friendly wedding transportation options!

28 Apr

Are you still struggling with choosing theme for your wedding? This is a great time of year to look for inspiration – even in some strange places.

To find theme ideas, be sure to check the obvious sources: search the web, check out wedding blogs, pick up some bridal magazines. There are some other places that you might be able to pick up some wedding theme ideas while you are researching. Check out these locations for additional ideas:

  • Wedding rentals – look at the displays and talk to the experts about what themes they have seen
  • Wedding planners – if you are working with a wedding planner be sure to pick their brain – chances are they’ve seen a lot!
  • Wedding locations/ venues – when touring locations, ask the folks in charge about themes they’ve seen – what other folks have done that worked really well
